Marc Schmitt

I’m the Managing Director of the DEIM Research Institute and a Research Associate at the University of Oxford. Prior, I served as Senior IT Partner for Equity Finance and Strategic Development at Siemens Financial Services. Before Siemens AG, I worked as a Management Consultant with several Fortune 500 companies, advising on finance, risk management, and digital transformation. I was educated in Germany, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom and hold a Ph.D. in Computer and Information Sciences, with a focus on AI in finance, and an MSc in Quantitative Finance from the University of Strathclyde, as well as an MSc in Software Engineering from the University of Oxford. My research focuses on artificial intelligence, business analytics, digital ecosystems, and financial economics, specifically AI-augmented decision-making and value creation:

I study decision-making under uncertainty, with a focus on AI-driven and AI-augmented decision processes in the context of business, finance, and security.

  • I also study how intelligent systems, such as AI agents and machine learning models, are integrated into organizational structures, shaping strategy, governance, and operational workflows
  • Further, I examine the broader institutional and systemic implications of these technologies in the context of digital ecosystems.
  • My papers apply these concepts across a broad range of topics, including: (1) Finance: asset pricing, portfolio and risk management, corporate finance, and FinTech; (2) Business: strategic and operational decision-making, digital transformation, and organizational AI capabilities (e.g., Chief AI Officer); (3) Security: cybersecurity decision-making, generative AI threats, and algorithmic governance.
